Entering the Final Leg of the 2019 Tony Race

We’re only a week away from the Tony Award telecast A lot has happened since we analyzed the initial standings of each Tony Awards nominee on Nomination morning. What’s happened over the past four weeks to the Tony hopefuls?

Let’s take a look…

Best Musical

1. Hadestown
2. The Prom (+1)
3. Tootsie (-1)
4. Ain’t Too Proud
5. Beetlejuice

What Happened: Of all the nominees, The Prom was the first to open. That gave the other nominees the edge when nominations came out, because they were all very recently opened, and front and center in the press. Over the past five weeks, The Prom has cemented itself as the Press’ darling, and the industry has caught on. I still doubt the goodwill behind The Prom will catapult them above Hadestown, but they are definitely in second here.

Best Play

1. The Ferryman
2. What the Constitution Means to Me
3. Ink
4. Gary
5. Choir Boy

What Happened: Nothing has changed here, but that doesn’t make it a clear call. The Ferryman is leading but What the Consititution Means to Me is right on it’s tail and this is probably the closest race of the 2019 Tonys. It’s a two-horse race though, the other three nominees are great plays but aren’t going to pull off an upset.

Best Revival of a Musical

1. Kiss Me, Kate(+1)
2. Oklahoma! (-1)

What Happened: These two shows were neck and neck on nomination morning, with Oklahoma! in a slight lead. That lead has flipped over the campaign, where now Kiss Me, Kate is barely holding onto a lead. That said, my money is on Oklahoma! re-taking the lead over this last week.

Best Revival of a Play

1. The Boys in the Band(+1)
2. The Waverly Gallery (-1)
3. All My Sons
4. Burn This
5. Torch Song

What Happened: The Boys in the Band has taken the lead here, due to some amazing campaigning that has kept the production, which ran over the summer of 2018, at the forefrot in the minds of the Tony voters. That said, this category is still anybody’s ballgame.

Hello! Great insights. I would love to hear more about why you say Kiss Me, Kate has taken the lead over Oklahoma! and can’t wait for your Drama Desk takeaways.
