A Very Broadway Valentine

It’s the second week of February and love is in the air!  If your Valentine’s date is a theater-goer, you may find it is hard to compete with your date’s first love – the theater.  We hope these 14 theatrical twists on classic date-night activities will help you please your loved one’s theater bug.

(1) Be a Honeymooner

Honeymoon in Vegas, now playing at the Nederlander Theatre, opened last month to rave reviews.  Tony winner Jason Robert Brown (Bridges of Madison County, The Last Five Years) delivers yet another Valentine’s Day worthy show starring Rob McClure, Brynn O’Malley & Tony Danza.  The New York Times said it was “irresistible,” and if you buy your date tickets, you may prove to be irresistible too.

(2) Dinner and a Show

Head to ‘Broadway’s Supper Club,’ 54 Below, on February 12th to watch some of Broadway’s favorite couples team up for A Very Broadway Valentine’s Day.  Go back for seconds on February 14th for Love Songs for VDAY , in which an all female cast will be singing musical theater’s best love songs.

(3) Get a Room

Book a room at the McKittrick Hotel and take your V-Day date out for a Valentine’s Day feast at The Heath, followed by a performance of Sleep No More.

(4) Hit the Pub

Joe’s Pub, that is, which has a line-up of three Valentine’s Day themed shows this week:

Rachael Sage: Valentine’s Concert Extravaganza – Tues Feb 10, 7:00pm

Never Sleep Alone: Valentine’s Show and Book Release Party – Feb 14th @ 9:30pm

Brown Girls Burlesque: Love/Not Love – Feb 15th @ 12:00am

(5) Movie Night

One of the things we are most excited about for Valentine’s Day 2015 is the release of The Last Five Years on the Silver Screen.  Broadway and screen vets Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick star in this screen adaptation of the classic Jason Robert Brown musical.

(6) Rock Out With Your Inch Out

Learn “The Origins of Love” in an epic tough-love concert like no other.   John Cameron Mitchell’s acclaimed return to the role he created in Hedwig and the Angry Inch is sure to make your Valentine’s Night an interesting one.

(7) Double Date

You are going to need a pretty big table to accommodate the 50 couples in Signature Theatre’s production of Big Love by Charles Mee.  Big Love stars Lynn Cohen (“The Hunger Games”), Rebecca Naomi Jones (American Idiot), and Bobby Steggert (Big Fish, Mothers and Sons), and is directed by Mee’s longtime collaborator, Tina Landau (Superior Donuts).

(8) Foreplay

If you and your date are looking for something a little more risqué, get tickets to Pretty Filthy at the Abrons Arts Center.  Pretty Filthy is the newest musical from The Civilians about life working in San Fernando Valley – the world capital of porn.

(9) Go to a Concert

The New York Philharmonic has a very special Valentine’s Day concert lined up for Saturday night at Avery Fisher Hall.  In A Broadway Romance, the Philharmonic and Tony Nominees Laura Osnes and Santino Fontana (R+H’s Cinderella) will perform Broadway’s most romantic songs.

(10) Go Stargazing

Catch MTC’s romance-filled production of Constellations starring Jake Gyllenhaal (“Nightcrawler”) and Ruth Wilson (“Saving Mr. Banks,” “The Affair”).

(11) Relax at Home

Cozy up in front of the fireplace and listen to some romantic showtunes.  We’ve put together a playlist of Broadway’s Greatest Love Songs to get you started.

Have any suggestions I missed? Let me know in a comment.

While you’re on the couch cuddling, you may also want to tune into SNL’s Valentine’s Special, which airs Saturday night, followed by the SNL 40th Anniversary Special on Sunday.

(12) Visit a Museum

The Museum of Sex has some steamy things lined up for Valentine’s Day weekend, including their new immersive exhibition “Funland: Pleasures & Perils of the Erotic Fairground.”  It’s the museum date-night as you’ve never experienced it before.

(13) Spend Time with the Family

Can’t find a sitter?  No problem!  Take the whole family to see Disney’s Aladdin where love, magic, and adventure are around every corner.

(14) Shop ‘till you Drop!

Bid on special Valentine’s Day prizes and support a good cause at TDF’s Valentine’s Day Auction.  Proceeds from the auction help fund TDF’s education programs, which serve over 10,000 students every year.

Now you have no excuse for taking your theater-loving date out bowling Saturday night.  We can see the sparks flying already.  Have a great Valentine’s Day.
