Reviewing the Reviewers: The New York Times Theater Critics’ Predictions

The New York Times chief theater critics, Ben Brantley and Jesse Green, recently published their thoughts and predictions for this year’s Tony Awards race. We review and analyze their predictions.

Take a look at all of our 2017 Tony Awards analysis, and be sure to check back the week before the Tonys for our final predictions, as well as after the Tonys to see how Brantley, Green, and I did at predicting winners!

Best Musical

Brantley

Will Win: Come From Away
Should Win: Dear Evan Hansen & The Great Comet

Green

Will Win: Dear Evan Hansen
Should Win: Dear Evan Hansen

Oliver: Brantley & Green disagree here on who will win. Not surprising, as this is a highly contested category. Dear Evan Hansen is the current favorite but Brantley’s guess suggests he thinks the underdog Come from Away will pull off an upset. What’s interesting is that neither believes Come from Away deserves the win.

Best Play

Brantley

Will Win: Oslo
Should Win: A Doll’s House, Part 2

Green

Will Win: Oslo
Should Win: A Doll’s House, Part 2

Oliver: Though Brantley, Green & Roth (me) agree on who will win as of right now,
I’d like to see one of either Sweat or Indecent should win. Each of those shows marks the Broadway debut of Pulitzer Prize winning female playwrights.

Best Musical Revival

Brantley

Will Win: Hello, Dolly!
Should Win: Hello, Dolly!

Green

Will Win: Hello, Dolly!
Should Win: Hello, Dolly!

Oliver: They’re pretty on point here. I’d love to find someone who predicts differently, but not sure there will be anyone.

Best Play Revival

Brantley

Will Win: Jitney
Should Win: Jitney

Green

Will Win: Jitney
Should Win: Present Laugher

Oliver: Jitney is a solid prediction. It’ll be a heavy favorite going into Tony night.

Best Actor in a Musical

Brantley

Will Win: Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen)
Should Win: Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) & Andy Karl (Groundhog Day(/em>)

Green

Will Win: Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen)
Should Win: Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen)

Oliver: Brantley’s review of Groundhog Day made it clear that he was on Team Karl, but I think Platt is the one and only rightful winner of this award.

Best Actress in a Musical

Brantley

Will Win: Bette Midler (Hello, Dolly!)
Should Win: Bett Midler (Hello, Dolly!)

Green

Will Win: Bette Midler (Hello, Dolly!)
Should Win: Bett Midler (Hello, Dolly!)

Oliver: Yup.

Best Actor in a Play

Brantley

Will Win: Kevin Kline (Present Laughter)
Should Win: Kevin Kline (Present Laughter)

Green

Will Win: Kevin Kline (Present Laughter)
Should Win: Denis Arndt (Heisenberg)

Oliver: Kline will have a big lead. I heard Denis Arndt was spectacular, though I saw his understudy go on.

Best Actress in a Play

Brantley

Will Win: Laurie Metcalf (A Doll’s House, Part 2)
Should Win: Laurie Metcalf (A Doll’s House, Part 2)

Green

Will Win: Laurie Metcalf (A Doll’s House, Part 2)
Should Win: Laurie Metcalf (A Doll’s House, Part 2)

Oliver: I’m a little surprised neither put Laura Linney (The Little Foxes) on their list. I think Linney has a solid chance of winning and am not yet sure which of the two I will be predicting to win myself.

Best Featured Actor in a Musical

Brantley

Will Win: Gavin Creel (Hello, Dolly!)
Should Win: Lucas Steele (The Great Comet)

Green

Will Win: Gavin Creel (Hello, Dolly!)
Should Win: Lucas Steele (The Great Comet)

Oliver: It’s certainly a battle between Creel and Steele. I think Creel should win and will probably win but Steele is a close enough second that it makes sense to include him on the list.

Best Featured Actress in a Musical

Brantley

Will Win: Mary Beth Peil (Anastasia)
Should Win: Mary Beth Peil (Anastasia)

Green

Will Win: Jen Colella (Come From Away)
Should Win: Rachel Bay Jones (Dear Evan Hansen)

Oliver: ? ? ? oh man – Brantley’s predictions. I can’t even…I have no idea where he got that from. Mary Beth Peil will not and should not win. ? ? ?. Green has a more rational assessment of the category. I think Colella should win, and probably will win, though I’m not writing off Rachel Bay Jones just yet.

Best Featured Actor in a Play

Brantley

Will Win: Danny DeVito (The Price)
Should Win: Nathan Lane (The Front Page)

Green

Will Win: Danny DeVito (The Price)
Should Win: Michael Aronov (Oslo)

Oliver: Both made solid predictions here. DeVito was well liked and a Tony would be a nice “Welcome to Broadway.”

Best Featured Actress in a Play

Brantley

Will Win: Condola Rashad (A Doll’s House, Part 2)
Should Win: Condola Rashad (A Doll’s House, Part 2)

Green

Will Win: Cynthia Nixon (The Little Foxes)
Should Win: Jayne Houdyshell & Condola Rashad (A Doll’s House, Part 2)

Oliver:Brantley’s confusing me again. He must have a thing with Featured Actresses.
Condola was great, but she’s not going to win in a category where she is competing against her co-star, Houdyshell, and Nixon (who is currently my pick).

Best Direction of a Musical

Brantley

Will Win: Michael Greif (Dear Evan Hansen)
Should Win: Rachel Chavkin (The Great Comet)

Green

Will Win: Michael Greif (Dear Evan Hansen)
Should Win: Rachel Chavkin (The Great Comet)

Oliver: This is really interesting. I agree with both that Chavkin should win. Given that Brantley believes Come From Away will win Best Musical, it makes sense that he thinks Greif will win Best Director. I spoke about how these categories might counterbalance one another in my initial analysis on Nomination day. With Green predicting that Dear Evan Hansen will win the Tony for Best Musical, I would have expected him to go with Chavkin or Christopher Ashley (Come From Away) for the win for Best Director. The only reason I see a voter going for a Grief win here is to give Hansen the props they didn’t give it at the top of the ballot.

Best Direction of a Play

Brantley

Will Win: Bartlett Sher (Oslo)
Should Win: Bartlett Sher (Oslo)

Green

Will Win: Bartlett Sher (Oslo)
Should Win: Bartlett Sher (Oslo)

Oliver: It sounds like I have to go see Oslo before Tony night. Bartlett Sher is no stranger to the Tony race, but I feel like there are other nominees who could easily win including Rebecca Taichman (Indecent) and Daniel Sullivan (The Little Foxes).

Best Book of a Musical

Brantley

Will Win: Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen)
Should Win: Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen)

Green

Will Win: Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen)
Should Win: Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen)

Oliver: People have been going gaga for Levenson’s book since before the Broadway Production of Dear Evan Hansen.

Best Score of a Musical

Brantley

Will Win: Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen)
Should Win: Dave Malloy (The Great Comet)

Green

Will Win: Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen)
Should Win: Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen)

Oliver: Dear Evan Hansen has a good shot at taking both writing awards, and Brantley & Green’s predictions align with the majority industry consensus.

Next week is the Broadway League’s Annual Spring Road Conference, which is a major period in the Tony Campaign, where productions attempt to woo all the voters from regional presenting houses. Be sure to check back for updates on how the conference affects the Tony Race. Also be sure to read our initial analysis of the Tony Nominations, and our look at major movements after week 1, so you know where each nominee was prior to next week’s events.
