Handicapping the Tony Awards Part 1: And They’re Off

The 2016 Tony Awards Race has begun!  Below are our 6 biggest take-aways from this morning’s announcement, as well as our analysis of where each nominee stands currently.

Key Takeaways:

  1.  With 16 Tony nominations, Hamilton now holds the record for most nominations, previously held by  The Producers and Billy Elliot (each with 15).  This is particularly impressive because there are fewer Tony categories this year with the Sound Design category being excluded. However, to beat The Producers’ winning record of 12 wins, Hamilton would have to win in all 13 categories it received a nomination in, which is not likely.

2. American Psycho, which led in nominations from the Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk, received only two Tony nominations.  That’s pretty unusual, and only time will tell what that means for American Psycho‘s future on Broadway.

3. In both the Lead and Featured Actor categories, Hamilton faces the same issues that Fun Home did in last year’s Featured Actor category – the Hamilton nominees might split the vote and allow for an underdog win.  Last year, Ruthie Ann Miles of The King and I beat out Frontrunners Judy Kuhn and Sydney Lucas of Fun Home by being a close runner up to a split Fun Home vote.

4. Lin Manuel-Miranda received four nominations himself for Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Book and Best Score – not too bad for someone who has already received a Pulitzer and a MacArthur Genius Grant this year.

5. All four nominees in the Best Play category are nominated for their Broadway debuts. These include Danai Gurira (Eclipsed), Florian Zeller (The Father), Stephen Karam (The Humans) and Mike Barlett (King Charles III).

6. Only one currently running show was completely snubbed by the nominating committee: Fully Committed with Jesse Tyler Ferguson. On Your Feet and American Psycho also vastly underperformed at the Tony Awards relative to their box office and critical reception.
