Handicapping the Tony Race Part 3: The Locks

We are 72 hours away from Tony night.  Before we make our final predictions tomorrow, we wanted to go over those nominees who have near locks on the hardware.  Are these people guaranteed to win? Nope.  If there is one thing we know from previous years, it’s that there are no guarantees on Tony night.  These are just the safest bets.

Revival of a Musical

The King and I has been on a roll, extending its run indefinitely and announcing a tour.  It also took home the Outer Critics, Drama League and Drama Desk award in the category.

Choreography

Christopher Wheeldon took a late, but significant lead in this category in the last few weeks.  It’s the weakest lead we are willing to call a “lock,” but it is pretty significant.

Scenic Design of a Play

Bunny Christie & Finn Ross (Curious Incident) had this category locked since before nominations came out.  There’s a subway, an escalator – the set is phenomenal.

Lighting Design of a Play

Curious Incident has the lock on this category as well with Paul Constable’s design.  Paul Constable won the Outer Critics and Drama Desk awards for Best Lighting, which is very rare for a play.

So, there you go.  4 of the 24 categories to be announced have already had a horse cross the finish line.  Who will win in the other 20 categories?  We’ll have to wait until Sunday to find out.  In the meantime, check back tomorrow when we release our full list of predictions.
