About The Show

It begins with a gathering of young, gay New Yorkers.
Each has a story aching to come out…

Profoundly touching and wickedly hilarious, Matthew Lopez’s highly-anticipated two-part play, THE INHERITANCE, asks how much we owe to those who lived and loved before us, and questions the role we must play for future generations.

Brilliantly re-envisioning E. M. Forster’s masterpiece “Howards End” to 21st-century New York, it follows the interlinking lives of three generations of gay men searching for a community of their own – and a place to call home.

This epic new play by Matthew Lopez marks the Broadway debut of a bold new voice in American theatre, directed by visionary two-time Tony Award® winner Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, Netflix’s The Crown). The Inheritance is a life-affirming journey of tears and laughter, through conflicts and connections, heartbreak and hope. A new play, generations in the making.

What We Did

We co-produced the Olivier Award-winning West End engagement of The Inheritance and the Tony Award-winning Broadway production.

Reviews

  • 'The Inheritance BLINDSIDES YOU. The feeling you get is a thrilling, electric combination of intoxication, emotion, immersion and excitement. It will stay with you forever. You walk out FLOATING ON AIR, with a burning desire to talk to anyone and everyone about it. This FEARLESS AND EPIC new play about acceptance and human kindness is not only necessary and urgent but a perfect example of playwriting, acting, direction and design that comes together seamlessly. I would go so far as to put it among THE GREATEST THEATREGOING EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE.'

    Richard Jordan The Stage
  • "I try to avoid the use of superlatives when I'm writing about plays. The Inheritance is EASILY ONE OF THE BEST PLAYS I'VE EVER SEEN."

    A Younger Theatre
  • The Inheritance is A MONUMENTAL ACHIEVEMENT. The plot is GRIPPING: shimmering with excellent jokes and told at a great lick, we indubitably become wrapped up. The experience is a bit like gorging on a classy Netflix melodrama.

    Time Out
  • THIS IS GREAT THEATRE. It is literary, profound and, yes, a pitiless examination of modern culture but it is also warm, outrageous, gentle, sexy and a little soapy. It breaks your heart, oh how it breaks your heart, and more than once – but it does not leave you without hope. It is an affirmation of the power of art and the strength of the human spirit. I WAS IMMERSED, ENCHANGED AND ENRAPTURED BY ONE OF THE GREAT GLORIES OF THE MODERN STAGE.

    Daily Express
  • THIS IS QUITE SOMETHING. The Inheritance teems with life: Watching it is like bingewatching a box-set. It tells multiple stories. It's a play that pierces your emotional defences, raises any number of political issues and enfolds you in its narrative.

    The Guardian
  • A MODERN MASTERPIECE. EPIC STORYTELLING. The Inheritance is THE TICKET THAT EVERYONE WANTS. It is one of the most moving, beautifully written and staged shows that I’ve seen. It is an INVENTIVE, ENTHRALLING, FUNNY, FRESH, AND BOLD gay epic. You will be laughing, crying, and, finally, comprehending. I DEFY ANYONE NOT TO BE MOVED. IT IS HEART-WRENCHING.

    Stage Review
  • Observer - Straight Off-Broadway Press Review

Stephen Daldry's production is masterly, spiced with mischief and teeming with incident.  It announces an intention not simply to punch home a series of significant moments but to trace the links between them: to unravel a history, and ask what one generation has passed on to the next - and whether the legacy could have been different.

    The Observer
  • A MASTERPIECE. The Inheritance is a heart-wrenching emotional rollercoaster. BE WARNED TO HAVE A HANKY READY.

    Boyz Magazine
  • The New York Times - Kinky Boots Broadway - Press Review

'The Inheritance has become THE BREAKOUT HIT OF LONDON. It hits a playgoer in the gut - Not in some time have I heard such audible sobbing.'

    The New York Times
  • Variety - Invisible Thread Off-Broadway Press

"A VAST MASTERPIECE. Beautifully acted throughout. The Inheritances is a BORN-AGAIN CLASSIC."

    Variety
  • A MUST-SEE, LANDMARK PRODUCTION WHICH WILL GO DOWN IN THEATRICAL HISTORY. It is NOTHING SHORT OF A TRIUMPH and worth every accolade that is being heaped upon it. YOU REALLY DON’T WANT TO BE THAT PERSON WHO MISSED IT. It’s truthful, emotionally honest and exquisite storytelling. It’s a play for now and it’s a play for us, the importance of which can’t be overstated. Watching this production is like going to church, it’s spiritual and often elevates you to another plane. The tears and blowing of noses in the audience is testament to the emotional power of this journey. The show is nothing but heart. It’s life affirming stuff that makes you want to go out and love, live like never before.

    Attitude
  • Never has a play been SO WELL-RECEIVED that the slamming of chairs could be heard in quick succession as a full house anxiously rose to standing ovation in appreciation of a MASTERLY WORK OF TRAGEDY, LAUGHTER AND LEARNING.

    The Upcoming
  • Glorious. LIKE IMMERSING YOURSELF IN A GREAT NOVEL. Matthew Lopez has created characters who are flawed, fascinating, funny, self-aware and self-destructive in a way MORE LIFELIKE THAN THEATRE NORMALLY HAS THE SKILL OR THE SPACE TO MANAGE. It is a love story sturdy enough to hold all the writer’s ideas about individualism and community, and gay identity and AIDS.

    The Times
  • A real coup d’theatre. I WAS A BLUBBERY MESS. The key to it is its sheer, aching beauty and simplicity. The production penetrates deep into the souls of its characters and, in turn, of the audience. It is UTTERLY AUTHENTIC, UNAPOLOGETIC AND PLAYFUL. By turns harrowing and healing, the cumulative effect of The Inheritance is A COURAGEOUS PIECE OF THEATRE in every sense: it celebrates human resilience and is a mark of it, too, for the cast and audience on a shared, highly emotional journey.

    LondonTheatre.co.uk
  • The Inheritance is a sweeping, episodic saga. It is A TRIUMPHANT, LANDMARK PRODUCTION whose influence will be felt for years to come. It is INCREDIBLY POWERFUL, HUGELY EMOTIONAL, JOYFUL, CAPTIVATING, AND HEARTBREAKING.

    Stage Review
  • ONE OF THE MOST MOVING PIECES OF THEATRE I HAVE SEEN in recent years. The play is touching, emotional and frequently hilarous. It is ARGUABLY THE BEST PLAY THIS YEAR!

    The Phoenix Arts Club
  • This is that rare beast, A PASSIONATELY AUDACIOUS, ENTIRELY SUCCESSFUL THEATRICAL EPIC THAT FULLY REALISES ITS BREATHTAKING AMBITIONS, filtering huge themes through the individual stories of characters we come to care very deeply about. It is also cracking entertainment. Trust me, YOU DON'T WANT TO BE THAT PERSON AT THE DINNER TABLE A DECADE FROM NOW, WISHING YOU'D GOT TICKETS TO THE INHERITANCE WHILE EVERYBODY ELSE AT THE PARTY STILL RAVES ABOUT IT. This is the sort of exciting, engrossing theatre that makes you wonder why people bother with Netflix.

    Whats On Stage
  • You will sob even as your spirits soar, an EXTRAORDINARY TRIUMPH. The Inheritance is a towering testament to love, loss and hope that will leave you in floods of tears but also exhilarated at being part of a GREAT MOMENT IN THEATRE HISTORY. DO NOT MISS IT.

    Daily Express
  • Stop the clocks; the race is won. Here is THE PLAY OF THIS YEAR AND LAST YEAR AND QUITE POSSIBLY NEXT YEAR as well. The Inheritance is A WORK OF RARE GRACE, TRUTH, AND BEAUTY and it is undoubtedly this century’s answer to Angels in America -- and then some.

    Evening Standard
  • The talk of the town. The Inheritance is AS BEAUTIFUL AS IT IS HARROWING, AS SEARINGLY SAD AS IT IS RAMBUNCTIOUSLY FUNNY, AS INTELLECTUALLY RIGOROUS AS IT IS JOYOUSLY ACCESSIBLE, AND AS THRILLINGLY ENTERTAINING AS IT IS DEADLY SERIOUS. It is a moving, gripping meditation on the power of storytelling, family ties, the basic human need for connection, and collective responsibility. It’s as compulsive as a soap opera, or as an unputdownable book. You emerge from the theatre emotionally drained but exhilarated.

    Whats On Stage
  • “See The Inheritance. It is a minor masterpiece, an experience I want to share with the people I love. The piece is sharply accurate, and hits harder than nearly everything I’ve seen in a theatre. It knocks the breath out of you.”

    Exeunt Magazine
  • the telegraph - The Realistic Joneses Broadway Press Reviews

To watch The Inheritance is to pass into a realm of TOTAL ABSORBTION before arriving at a state of emotionally shattered but elated awe. The Inheritance instantly looks like A MODERN CLASSIC, perhaps THE MOST IMPORTANT AMERICAN PLAY OF THE CENTURY so far.  Star ratings are almost beside the point when confronted by work of this magnitude, but HELL, YEAH, FIVE.

    Dominic Cavendish The Daily Telegraph
  • A heartbreaker from start to finish, this rare theatrical offering is UNDOUBTEDLY THE PRODUCTION OF THE CENTURY. Watching this epic resembles binge-viewing a favourite TV show. It’s an experience that takes you through so many lows and highs, a miraculous sensation of overwhelming emotion.

    BroadwayWorld
  • AN EXTRAORDINARY, EPIC EVENT. Matthew Lopez's rhapsodic deep dive asks how to love, how to live and how to do those well.  It works brilliantly. It's captivating, and it ends with an audience quietly sobbing.

    Sunday Times
  • I cried more than once, laughed, squirmed a little, ached for the lost souls, recognised their flaws, hoped for their salvation and accepted their fall. And, yes, cried again. THIS IS NOT SIMPLY THEATRE. THIS IS LIFE, and oh how it makes you want to live. THERE CAN BE NO HIGHER PRAISE.

About The Show

Fleeing the Russian revolution and leaving behind a world of opulence and wealth, aristocrat Tamara de Lempicka and her beloved husband Tadeusz are forced to make a new life.  In the rising tide of fascism, Tamara takes to painting to survive, and when she meets the free-spirited Rafaela, a prostitute on the fringes of Parisian society, she’s torn between the life she cherishes with her husband and the passion, ambition, and possibility awoken in her by her new muse.  Inspired by the life of the artist who transformed herself from penniless refugee to star of the art world when the world itself teetered on chaos, Lempicka looks at the beauty and danger of one painter pursuing it all.

  • ★★★★ Boy, is he a mind reader.  Brown sent people spilling back out into the lobby and on to the sidewalk and into the subway still quizzing each other.  Secret is a salutary reminder that even in a disenchanted age, some mysteries remain”

    The Guardian
  • TheaterMania - Invisible Thread Off-Broadway Press Review

“An astounding piece of psychological theater. Secret challenges audiences to look at the ways our personal mythology guides our lives. The first-act finale is as thrilling and mind-boggling as any of the great curtain-closers from the entire canon of American drama.”

    TheaterMania
  • You have probably never seen anything like Derren Brown. It’s so remarkable that you will think everyone in the audience is a plant, but I assure you, it’s all real. The UK’s most famous mentalist is going to blow your mind.

  • Time Out New York - Invisible Thread Off-Broadway Press Review

★★★★ Brown oozes confidence and charisma, you can’t turn away. Secret is enough to make even the most hardened skeptic think twice.

    Time Out
  • If you like your brains scrambled, or over easy, or poached or any way other than the way you usually carry them around, Derren Brown is the fella for you. Brown is a living rubik’s cube. he is the pied piper of possibility. He takes the magic that is theatre and kicks it into the stratosphere while you are watching and pulls an entire zoo out of his hat. Go see this show.

    New York Theatre Guide
  • "Make no mistake, Secret has enough characters, story, conflict, emotion, surprises, and payoff to rival the output of any dramatist. To call this just a magic show or a mind-reading demonstration or a hypnotist act is to miss its artistry and intelligence."

    TDF
  • Secret is an intoxicating dream, a riddle, a game that makes one feel as if he’s stepped through the looking glass and taken on a trip for a couple of hours through a dizzying hall of wonders. Funny, bewildering, almost frightening, and even sometimes poignant, Brown redesigns what one should expect from a magic show.

About The Show

From stage to screen, two-time Olivier Award winner Derren Brown has mesmerized millions worldwide with his unique brand of mind reading, persuasion, and psychological illusion. Now, for the first time ever, this U.K. phenomenon and Netflix star brings his talents to Broadway.

After a sold-out, critically acclaimed run off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company, Derren Brown: Secret returns with a spellbinding experience that dares us — in the most jaw-dropping way — to take a closer look at the stories and beliefs that guide our lives. Behold a theatrical event of the mind in this “thrilling spectacle of psychological magic” (Entertainment Weekly). Now on Broadway at the Cort Theatre.

  • ★★★★ Boy, is he a mind reader.  Brown sent people spilling back out into the lobby and on to the sidewalk and into the subway still quizzing each other.  Secret is a salutary reminder that even in a disenchanted age, some mysteries remain”

    The Guardian
  • You have probably never seen anything like Derren Brown. It’s so remarkable that you will think everyone in the audience is a plant, but I assure you, it’s all real. The UK’s most famous mentalist is going to blow your mind.

“Secret is way beyond the usual brand of magic”

    The Wrap
  • "Make no mistake, Secret has enough characters, story, conflict, emotion, surprises, and payoff to rival the output of any dramatist. To call this just a magic show or a mind-reading demonstration or a hypnotist act is to miss its artistry and intelligence."

  • Entertainment Weekly - A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder Broadway Press Review

"We gave it an A. Brown dumbfounds with a stunning colonnade of tricks, physical and psychological, limned by the sensation of third-rail danger. A thoughtful, nimble script - Secret is real magic."

    Entertainment Weekly
  • The Huffington Post - Invisible Thread Off Broadway Press Reviews

“A wild-eyed, “how’d he do that” romp. Derren Brown is self-effacing and enthused with coal-shovels full of charm”

    HuffPost
  • The New York Times - Kinky Boots Broadway - Press Review

At a cultural moment when the idea of “owning the narrative” has become the cliche du jour, he boldly posits that the stories we tell ourselves are precisely what limit our perceptions.
